Cozy Coats Circa 1978

When Disco ruled...


Last Saturday I was doing my usual thing; yard saleing. I came across a box full of ladies' magazines all from the same year, 1978. I thumbed through them and was instantly transported back 34 years. Now for those of you who didn't even exist back then, are too young to remember or were merely existing in a haze, here's a short recap: Jimmy Carter was president, gas was .63 a gallon, people were shaking their thangs to Y.M.C.A, Stayin' Alive and Gloria Gaynor's, I Will Survive. Must see T.V.  included The Love Boat, Three's Company and Charlie's Angles (the original). Oh yeah, and John Travolta was the sexiest man alive. It was a good year in my opinion. I was young enough to not have any responsibility other than taking out the trash and old enough to pick out my own clothes.
Some of the 'must have' coats of the season were featured the September issue of Good Housekeeping (then .95). Seriously, I could have been looking at the 2012 issue of any fashion magazine (now ~4.99). I'd pretty much rock any of these coats. I've numbered them from left to right. Which one would you wear this season?

  1. What fantastic coat ads! I graduated from high school in 1978. I remember loving plaid back in those days and tweed. I just can't specifically remember a coat I had but I do remember spending all of one paycheck on some brown leather boots in 1977. My mom was so disappointed in me!

  2. My era!! I was in college in 1978. Nice vintage coats. I love looking back in time; old magazines do that wonderfully.

  3. I was born in 1978 so I am not really familiar with the 70s at all, but still most of what the models are wearing would translate perfectly into todays fashion. I do think the capes are a bit long to be modern still they are great. Those boots! Love it all.

  4. I love looking at old magazines and checking out the styles. In 1978, I was five years old. I had this fabulous little blue velvet coat with a fur muff. Oh how I loved that thing!

  6. Well, in 1978 I was 6 years old. I do however, remember watching the Love Boat, Three's Company, Charlie's Angels, the Bionic Man (I think that's what it was called...at least that's what I called him) & Wonder Woman. And I definitely agree about John Travolta. I remember watching Grease for the first time and thinking "Now that's a fine man right there!" (LOL!)

    Anyway, I would love to have coat #4. It looks like the classic trench, gone cape-style.

  7. I think I had a pea coat, does that sound about right? Maybe that was later...No that was way later. I have no idea. And there's too many to choose from above! You know me, I'll just stay with what I already have!

  10. Around that time I had a snow-white ultra-puffy short ski jacket. I must have had another coat similar to these but those memories are eclipsed by that white jacket. It was true love! The vintage shop seems to have lots of wool coats from this era on the racks now. I do like a new (thrifted) coat every winter. Thanks for this post - memories.

  11. Ohhh. I'm dizzy. I remember those days a little too well. I hadn't hit any kind of fashion stride yet, but I had my secret style icons. I distinctly remember having a wrap coat with a hood that resembled one of those in the pictures. I was making most of my clothes otherwise, bias-cut midi skirts and tunic tops. I was married to my ex-husband, putting him through school in freezing Rochester NY. The only glamor I saw was in the magazines. Fortunately life got better over time. :-) But you're right, I'd wear most of those coats now in a heartbeat. Some things are better the second time around.

  13. a wonderful post, sheila, brings back memories to a good time. i just finished high school and started to work, my boyfried as well as a banker and he needs a good suit. so we went to hugo boss outlet nearby and there i found a dark blue kind of duffle coat, but without a hood. it was a man's coat, but small enough for me. it was of very good quality and i got it for a reasonable price.
    from the coats above i would wear no. 20, although the collar would be a bit heavy for me.
    in the last 20 years i always found perfect coats, when i am not looking for them, in charity shops or in winter sale. so it happens that i bought a coat or a winter jacket nearly every year.

  16. The burgundy cape-coat (#6) is fabulous - can't believe it was only $160. It would look great today.

    I remember I had a short double-breasted finger-tip length coat that my mom got me - wore it with a floppy hat and jeans.
