Just in Case...

Michaelangelo long skirt: thrifted
White shirt: Hubby's closet
Fashion Focus heels: thrifted

One of the delights of thrifting is being able to buy completely useless crap that may gather dust for months, years even before it’s worn and not feel guilty about it. I call these transactions, “Just In Case” purchases or JIC’s. For example, I may buy a super cute pair of jeans that’s two sizes too small, just in case I lose 50 lbs.
Do any of you remember when Sharon Stone wore her husband’s plain white button down shirt over a formal bottom to the Oscars? It caused a media frenzy and forever more it was fashionable to wear something casual over something formal. That’s what I had in mind when I bought this long skirt. I’m gonna rock it just like Sharon did; you know….just in case I get invited to a high society charity ball or something this holiday season.
Oh… and for the record, I did lose about 50 lbs three years ago and still wear those super cute jeans. A large percentage of my JIC’s do have their moment to shine. These items are still waiting for theirs…

I can't wait for overalls to make a come back!

These shoes have green, red and yellow lights in the heels that flash every time a step is taken (like the kids tennis shoes). They're aptly named
"Disco" on the soles.

This makes me think of Prince...
She wore a raspberry beret...the kind you
find in a second hand store...

Time to fess up! Tell us about some of your
"just in case" buys.

Linking up with Patti
and the gals at Monday Mingle.
See you there!

  1. OMG I thought only I did this! LOL I love that you have JIC's. This metallic skirt is super fun with the plain white button down and I think overalls are trying to come back. I've been searching for a fun denim pair--I have a green pair that I break out every now and again. ;-)

  2. OMG! Those shoes!!! Will you please please please where them in a post without any lighting except for the shoes? Like at night or something, then you do some disco moves and make those awesome shoes light up!!
I love that beret too. I'd wear that around the holidays for sure. Overalls look terrible on me because of my small shoulders, no boobs, and wide hips.
I have some "JIC" things which I keep around to use in blog posts maybe...like a wide brimmed hat (haven't worn that in public yet) a wild leopard print swing coat which to me is super dressy, and some 50's necklaces.
If I saw a skirt like yours in a thrift store I'd definitely consider it and it would have made me think of that very photo of Sharon Stone.

  4. So fabulous - I think Sharon was more gorgeous that night than ever, and you as well! Love the raspberry beret too. Sadly, most of my JIC's never come to fruition : < but I am thrilled for you : >

  5. Your shirt, skirt combo is exactly right!! Gorgeous. And to hell with an occasion!! Do like a lot of the bloggers do, and instead of a JIC, make it a JB (as in "Just Because I Feel Like It). I love having items on hand like that and probably have way too many. But then, years later, they become some of my favorite things to wear.

  6. I love that Prince song and howl it as loudly as possible whenever I hear it. You really need to show us how that beret looks atop your pretty head. It's just lovely and so is this skirt and blouse outfit!

  9. I am blown away by the originality and enjoyability of these posts. I am not a fashionista, and in fact I am a guy. BUT: I love following this "blog" on the sly. Sheila, you've got it together.

Love your JIC's--I'd wear those shoes to work just to freak stuffy my co-workers out!!
I have an olive suede maxi skirt that is 50 lbs too small I score for $3 JIC. I've got a friend who has been hinting for it that I think i will sacrifice it for.

  15. Bless your heart, I hope overalls never come back in style even though I wore them almost every day during parts of the 80s :o

Look at you, all Ms. Pass Me My Golden Globe Right Now! You can wear that outfit to date night, ya know :)

Okay, I confess, two months ago I thrifted a vintage green sequined sleeveless top JIC of...I hook up with The Grinch? A 6 foot tall leprechaun? Arrive very, very late at a cocktail party where everyone else is very, very drunk and will only see a shiny blur? LOL. I've already got that thang ear-marked for the firm Christmas party.

  17. I absolutely remember this Sharon Stone look...and the one when she work the gap t-shirt with the formal skirt also. I thrifted a shimmery lavender skirt similar to yours and wore it to the ballet or symphony one time. The funny thing is I was t-h-i-s close to putting it on today for my outfit pics, but changed my mind. Maybe soon....
I do have a few of those just in case items and it's always a constant debate with myself as to whether I should let them go or hang on to them. Thrifting is so fun because you have more of an opportunity to experiment or just play around without breaking the bank.
Love the raspberry beret. And those light up shoes!! So cute.

  18. I love that Prince song, and I remember when Sharon Stone wore that outfit. Your take on her look is fantastic. What a gorgeous skirt. I hope you WEAR this for real!!! Sometimes I buy a thing because it is audacious and makes me smile, thinking I won't wear it - but I do!

  19. You look ready for the red carpet. I love how that shirt looks on you. The beret is just too cool! Love it. I have a really sparkly sequined, beaded top that I hope to wear someday. It is really glitzy!

  22. What a fun post, Sheila. You call them "just in case" outfits, I call them outfits "for the life I wish I had." I always seem to gravitate toward lovely things for which I have no occasion to wear. But when you're thrifting, it's okay to splurge on JIC items because you're not spending a fortune. ~ Robyn at Robyn's Nest

  23. oh my gosh this is HILARIOUS! i definitely do this, too. i'm all kinds of proud that your JIC 50lbs lighter jeans came in handy- i have a similar JIC pair that i HOPE will come in handy one day soon :) i also have some JIC club wear (i.e. sequins everywhere, not so conservative things) but i have never gone clubbing, lol. JIC, right?

those shoes are the best. the best.

  24. I really like your Sharon Stone inspired outfit. I found a similar skirt at a thrift store and came so close to buying it, but I didn't. You know the story; I went back for it and it wasn't there. I would love to do an SS outfit! Yours looks great!
