Decisions, Decisions

Paper or plastic, credit or debit, left or right, heels or flats, this or that? These are the mundane, non-life-altering decisions I'm sure most of us make on a daily basis.  And let's not even talk about the most mind boggling question of all: "What am I going to wear today?"
This past week, though, I had a serious decision to make, at least in my book. I was half way to work (about 20 minutes into the trip) and realized I'd forgotten my cell phone at home, something I rarely do. I almost broke out into a cold sweat! Barreling down the freeway at 75 70 mph, I couldn't decide if I should turn around, go back home and get it or live without it for a day. Mind you, there's computers with internet and phones at work, but there's nothing like having my own little link to the world right in my hot little hand. Well, I quickly checked my purse to make sure I at least had my wallet. I did. Whew! I decided I could live without the cell for a day. At least I had money with me to buy something at the thrift store. Which would be worse for you, leaving your wallet or leaving your cell phone?

Here's another situation I'm often faced with, more so in the big city than out in the  rural area where I live. I'm approaching a traffic light and have to stop. And right outside my window is a guy with a sign indicating he's homeless, lost his job, broke, war vet, blind, deaf, hungry, etc. Sometimes he may even have a dog with him. To make matters worse, I'm usually chowing down on a hamburger or something at the time. I have to make a split decision about what I'm going to do. I'm sorry to say I haven't developed a standard response to this situation yet and that my decision usually depends on my mood. Sometimes I give some spare change, sometimes I offer to buy food, and other times I just quietly ignore the person.  What do you do when this happens? When I approached the blind, deaf, homeless, broke (and thankfully dogless) guy at the traffic light this week. I didn't give him any spare change. I was selfishly saving it for a cup of frozen yogurt.

I have a great camera. But I'm still learning how to use it. So sometimes my photos aren't really what I'd like them to be, but I post them anyway. The flip side of that situation is feeling like I said something really stupid in a post or it just didn't make sense. Which is worse in your opinion; stupid posts or bad photos? Sometimes I do both
 . . . at the same time!
I've been wanting to thank you all, my fellow bloggers for helping me make  a decision couple of weeks ago when I purchased a pair of sweats that I wanted to refashion. You offered all kinds of great suggestions. Thank you so much. Turns out though, that they weren't too small after all and I kept them as they were.
I need to call upon you all again for help. A few posts back, Madame Lotta Prada posted a horoscope. It got lots of views, but not a lot of comments. So I'm putting it out there for my fellow bloggers to help me decided if it should continue to be a monthly feature. The poll is at the bottom of this post.

Here's a couple of things I don't even need to think twice about: linking up at Visible Monday and Monday Mingle. Those are no brainers!
What decisions (non) life altering or otherwise, have you had to make lately?

Pendleton plaid wool jacket: thrifted
L.L. Bean Slim Leg jeans: thrifted
Van Heusen blouse: thrifted
a.n.a denim vest: thrifted
Gianni Bini boots: via Dillard's (clearance, last year)

Do you like the idea of a monthly horoscope?

    1. Thanks Tamera. I don't actually wear it anywhere, just around the house for yard work.

  2. You look quite fallish in your stylish outfit, Sheila. And I think you have enough wood chopped, now go carry water.

    1. Thanks Pao. LOL! The chopped wood is courtesy of my husband.

  3. You're dressed perfectly for fall chores. I'm often next to a transient here in my area of Seattle at intersections around town. I've given money before but most often I keep staring straight ahead. I've been a mom for almost 30 years and I'm tired of people asking me for things! When I'm in my car alone I just want to be left alone, ya know? But, one time I was on my way home from grocery shopping when the kids were really young and they were in the back seat. They were acting up and driving me crazy as usual. When I saw a homeless person on the side of the road with a sign asking for any kind of donation, I pulled over and handed him the kids box of cereal they'd picked out at the store. ha! That's what they get for acting up in the car. The homeless guy on the side of the road looked confused and a little guilty taking what he knew was there's. ;)

  4. What a hilarious story! I keep telling myself to keep some canned goods in the car for just such occasions but haven't done it yet.

  5. I love your backdrop here. You fit in with that wonderful warm, autumn vibe of wood smoke, pumpkins... In terms of giving, sometimes there are three or four people at ONE street corner downtown asking for my money - usually two homeless people and two charities. The paid charity soliciters populate almost every downtown block now. Frankly, I AM TIRED. I want to make a button or a pin to wear as a symbol that says in a glance, "No thank you, I donate privately to my chosen causes." I feel cold when I ignore, but that's what I'm being trained to do.

    1. Thanks Melanie. I'll be using it often during the fall and winter or until we burn it all trying to keep warm.
I wouldn't mind giving some spare change to someone down and out as long as I knew that was really the case, but so many times it isn't!

  8. regarding the donates to the beggars i made the decision that i give only one a few euros once a week. he is a friendly old man, his dog is a sweetie we exchange a few sentences and say good by with a smile. i would be glad if i could make so easy a decision too when i look into my wardrobe in the morning. only the lack of time drives me to find out what i want quickly.

  9. Hi Sheila!! This is one of those great meaty posts where I have to keep scrolling back to make sure I comment on the myriad of things you bring to mind!! First: This outfit is GREAT. The layering, colors, patterns etc. I'm sitting here wearing white jeans because I love the look going in to fall and winter. Maybe we should do a bi-weekly outfit post with white jeans in cold weather.

Secondly, let me assure you (at least from my perspective) you've never said or looked anything other than gorgeous, smart, funny, creative, and thoughtful. I never thought your photos or posts were lacking in any way. In fact, although I've had similar fears about photos and posts, or comments I've left on other blogs, I'd like to think that in this little corner of the blogosphere, most participants are here to enjoy the unique voice of each blogger. If not, I'm in trouble too.

I don't have a hard and fast rule about panhandlers, homeless folks, etc. If I have it, I'll share. If I don't or the traffic light changes, I won't trip at my inability to stop. If I've just given something to someone else, the next person probably won't get something etc. Most of all, I don't worry about it much anymore. I've given food if it seems right, spare change, a $20, it all depends on that moment. I figure I'll do what I can and let the Universe take care of the rest.

(I just scrolled back up) Okay, as hard as it is, I'd rather leave my phone behind than my wallet. Tough call, though. And yes, I love horoscopes, anytime anywhere. As a Pisces, I believe in all that, or at least want to consider it. :-)

  10. I have the same quandry about the down and out as you, especially in traffic. But I learned my lesson the expensive way last fall. I sped through a light at the tail end of the light so as not be stuck idling next to a beggar at a traffic stop. Two months later I receive a ticket for making that turn. The ticket cost $100. I would have been better off handing the poor man a $20.

    1. Oh no! Sorry to hear that Terri. From this point on, I'm going to have some canned goods in the car to hand out.

  11. I just say "no", nothing else, just "no." And I donate monthly to a local food bank - at least I know my money's not going to drugs or booze.

I love the plaid and the floral together.

I'm guilty of both bad pictures and bad writing, but you have to just soldier on.

  14. Such a nice backdrop for pics! I like the print on your top paired with the plaid jacket too :)

I'd definitely go back home for my phone - always need it close by just in case! I've always turned back after noticing it's gone, luckily I've only left it at home a few times.

  16. I like how you styled the plaid with the floral top, great layering!

  17. Hey Sheila: I think you have great photos, but for me - I love reading so probably would not even notice if the photos were flawed. Also - you can't do away with the horoscope now, at least not until you do one of each zodiac sign.

  18. I agree with other commenters - you are always so fabulous and thoughtful. I enjoy your photos and your posts.

I can't believe you wear that coat for yard work - so lovely!

It's more important to have $$ for the thrift store ... lol.

  19. Sorry I am so behind on commenting, but had to say how amazing you look in these jeans and thank you for your thoughtful post! I so often agonize over photo choice or get bogged down in the writing, but you do both marvellously. I find that once I "just ost it" I can forget about it, even the stuff that's a bit cringe-y. I find that people move on really quickly. I wish I had enough time to really do everything in my life justice (which would include reading my camera manual too, lol), but then I would miss out on so much!
